Ultra Race Proposal Puts Trail In The Spotlight

The Farmersville Parks and Recreation Board heard a presentation Sept. 3 on a proposed endurance running event that could bring long-distance racers onto the trail system in early December. David Reyes outlined plans for the Freight Train 200, which he said is planned for the first weekend of December and would begin in Wolf City before using Farmersville as a turnaround point.

According to the presentation, the event would offer multiple race distances: 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, and 200 miles. Board members did not vote on the proposal during the meeting, and no formal action was taken that night.

Discussion around the presentation focused on what the city and organizers may need to address if the race moves ahead. Board members discussed restroom access, possible event permits, and safety at trail crossings. Those issues appeared to be central to whether the event could be managed smoothly for both runners and the public.

The board also discussed trail conditions. A member said the city-controlled section from Farmersville to Celeste is in excellent condition, but concerns were raised about bridges outside that area. Based on the discussion, the trail would remain open to other users during the event rather than being closed off exclusively for racers.

The presentation put the trail in the spotlight as a possible host for a large regional event, but the project remains in the discussion stage. For now, the board has heard the concept and flagged the practical issues that would still need work before any event details are settled.
