Public Hearings Called; Sign Rewrite Tabled
The Plano Planning and Zoning Commission considered an October 5 agenda that included a church replat and site plan, a request to call a public hearing on a mixed-use zoning amendment, proposed Comprehensive Plan maintenance updates, subdivision ordinance amendments, and city sign regulations.
Church Item Approved At McDermott And Gifford
Commissioners unanimously approved a preliminary replat and revised site plan for the Church of Christ on McDermott Road Addition at the southwest corner of McDermott Road and Gifford Drive. Staff said the request was needed to dedicate new easements, abandon existing easements, expand the building, and modify the fire lane and parking configuration. The vote was 8-0.
Public Hearing Called On 103.6-Acre Hotel Relocation Request
The commission called a public hearing on a request to amend Urban Mixed-Use-3 zoning on 103.6 acres east of Alma Drive, 525 feet north of Plano Parkway. Staff said the applicant wants to move the hotel use from Block Z to Block T and had not gathered all required property-owner signatures. Staff said calling the public hearing would allow the applicant to submit the zoning petition and follow the normal zoning process. The transcript does not include the vote result for this item.
Comp Plan Update Heads To Public Hearing After Review
Commissioners voted 8-0 to call a public hearing on proposed updates to the social environment and natural environment pillars of Plano’s Comprehensive Plan. Staff described the work as a maintenance review that includes informational updates and action implementation and progress updates intended to reflect current conditions, priorities, programs, and practices.
Smoking Language Drew Questions
Part of the discussion centered on a proposed change to smoking policy language. A commissioner questioned whether changing the language from expanding restrictions to maintaining and evaluating existing policies could soften the city’s approach. Staff said the update was intended to reflect current policies and that the item could be reconsidered before the Comprehensive Plan amendment returns. Commissioners also discussed how vaping is addressed, and staff said the code already includes vaping in the definition of smoking.
Commissioners Asked About Results Behind Policy Wording Changes
Several commissioners said they wanted more information about outcomes behind language changes that shift some actions toward terms such as maintaining, evaluating, expanding, or improving. Staff said benchmark information was intended to be included in the recommendation materials and that additional information is available on the city website.
