McKinney Council Rolls Out Honors, Funds Public Safety And Airport Work, Then Clears New Housing Plan

At the May 19, 2026 McKinney City Council meeting, members moved through a mix of recognition, spending, and land-use decisions that touched everything from emergency crews and veterans to parks, the airport, police facilities, and a proposed senior housing project near U.S. 380. For residents, the biggest takeaways were where the city is putting money, what kinds of development may come next, and what still has to be studied before construction moves ahead.
EMS Week Gets The Spotlight
Council proclaimed May 17 through May 23 as Emergency Medical Services Week in McKinney. The city highlighted the first responders, medics, dispatchers, firefighters, and medical staff who handle emergencies across the community. The nod also pointed to the training and coordination behind the scenes that can make a difference when someone needs help fast.
Military Appreciation Month Is Marked
May was also named Military Appreciation Month in McKinney. The proclamation recognized active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, along with the Coast Guard, National Guard, and other branches. The council also promoted a Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on May 26 at 10 a.m., giving residents a local way to honor those who died in service.
Jacoby Walter Gets Hometown Recognition
Council declared May 19, 2026, as Jacoby Walter Day in McKinney. The proclamation recognized Walter’s path from local schools to Baylor University and then the NBA, where he became the first student-athlete from McKinney ISD selected in the draft. The city also noted his plans to give back through youth camps and community work, putting a homegrown success story front and center for families and young athletes.
Council Backed Grady Littlejohn Improvements
Members approved a construction contract for improvements at the Grady Littlejohn softball and baseball complex. Parks and recreation staff said the work will move forward with C C Contractors. For families using the fields, the vote keeps the project moving toward a better place to play and host games.
Airport Taxiway Project Clears Another Hurdle
Council approved a contract with Mario Sinacola for excavation tied to Phase Two of the McKinney National Airport taxiway project. Airport staff said the work covers the southern part of Taxiway Alpha, adds a connector toward the Texas Instruments area, and comes with a total project cost of $7.6 million with contingency. The changes are meant to improve access and support airport operations as that area keeps growing.
Public Safety Renovation Advances
The council signed off on a $5.5 million guaranteed maximum price for Phase Six of the McKinney Public Safety Renovation. Staff said this step focuses on the south side of the first floor, where Fire once operated, and will now be adjusted for police needs. The city said more steps are still coming, but the move keeps the long-running public safety building upgrade on track.
