McKinney Board Backs Historic Marker Push, Clears Fire-Damaged Home For Demo, And Moves Landmark Tax Break Ahead

The Historic Preservation Advisory Board met May 7, 2026, and spent much of the night on projects that touch old homes, neighborhood history, and preservation tools that can affect property owners and longtime residents. The board also heard an update on McKinney’s Undertold Project, which is aimed at telling stories that have not always been written down.

Undertold McKinney Project Lands First Marker In Collin County

City neighborhood planner Tori Brown said the city launched the Undertold McKinney Project in June 2025 to work with residents on history that has been overlooked, especially in East McKinney. The first project centered on E.S. Doty School, and the Texas Historical Commission awarded a marker in February. Brown said installation is expected in spring 2027, followed by a public unveiling.

Year Two Will Open Up To More Residents

Brown said the next round will run a full 12 months, with public applications for the community advisory group open through May 17. The first meeting is set for June 11 at City Hall. Unlike the pilot year, the city is not locking the group into one project type, so residents could help shape anything from a history event to a public art piece or another marker.
