Historic Board Backs Two Markers, Clears Tax Break For Muse House

McKinney’s Historic Preservation Advisory Board kept its June 4, 2026 meeting focused on one thing: recognizing older homes and the work going into keeping them standing. The board approved two historic markers and signed off on a tax exemption tied to major repairs at one of the city’s oldest properties, decisions that touch both neighborhood history and the cost of preservation for homeowners.

Muse House Wins Historic Marker

The board approved a historic marker for the Muse House at 1306 N. Waddill St., requested by owner Emily Martin. Staff said the home dates to about 1858 to 1859, once housed the Muse Academy, and already received a state historic marker in 1978. Board members praised the house’s appearance and noted it may be among the oldest homes in Collin County, giving the property another layer of local recognition.

Tax Exemption Approved For Muse House Work

The board also approved a Level I Historic Marker Neighborhood Improvement Zone Program tax exemption for the same property at 1306 N. Waddill St. Staff said the owners documented more than $188,321 in eligible improvements over the past three years, including foundation repair, roofing, siding, windows, doors, electrical, plumbing, paint, insulation, and HVAC. That means the restoration work cleared the city’s threshold and can now qualify for the incentive.
