Collin County Approves May Events, Flags Shelter Crisis, Signals Cities May Need To Step In

Collin County Commissioners met this week to approve large events and review a growing issue at the county animal shelter. The discussion focused on capacity limits, future expansion, and how cities across the county may need to respond as demand rises.
County Greenlights Major May Events
Officials approved permits for Vintage Market Days set for May 8 to 10 and Rodeo Celina set for May 29 to 31 after public hearings with no opposition. Both events met county requirements and moved forward with unanimous votes, setting up two large gatherings at Myers Park.
Shelter Stays Full As Growth Climbs
Staff said the county animal shelter was over capacity every day in 2025, with animal stays increasing and demand rising about 7.8 percent annually. The current facility, opened in 2006, is showing wear and strain as intake continues to grow across the county.
$5.7 Million Expansion Moves Forward But Questions Remain
A voter approved $5.7 million bond is funding a shelter expansion, with about $4.9 million remaining for construction. Plans include new kennels and adoption space, but officials said final pricing is still pending and not all upgrades may fit within the current budget.
