Amenities Board Meeting
Board Reviews Senior Center, Civic Center, and Library Updates
The Amenities Board heard updates on the senior center, civic center and library, and elected officers. The meeting included discussion of a possible temporary relocation for senior center activities, library grants and donations, and possible future changes to civic center rental charges.
Board Elects Its Leadership
The board voted to name Mary Sue Wells as president, Ann Seward as vice chair, and Barbara Henry as secretary. With only three members present, members also briefly raised the question of adding more people to the board, but that topic was not discussed because it was not on the agenda.
Senior Center May Need Temporary Relocation
Mary Sue Wells reported that the senior center was notified by the centennial committee that it would need to be vacated for up to several months for work that needs to be done. She said no schedule had been provided yet. Regina Fryman arranged for use of the family life center at the First Methodist Church for the center’s activities during that time, though hours and activities may need to change.
Senior Center Keeps Busy Schedule Going
The senior center was reported to be open for crafting on Mondays; for games and card games Tuesday through Thursday; for 42 on Tuesday and Friday evenings; and for bridge on the third Friday of the month. A hand-and-foot group also meets on various Fridays, and potluck dinners continue on the third Thursdays. Wells said the center may close early on some days if everyone needs to leave early.
Senior Center Rules Headed Back To Board
Members said the senior center rules and regulations had been revised and had received general approval from some members, but no final action was taken at this meeting. The board is expected to discuss the changes at a future meeting before they could be placed on a city council agenda.
Civic Center Logged 32 Outside Rentals
The civic center had about 32 outside rentals from the end of April through the meeting date, not counting city functions or groups such as Rotary. Staff also said it would likely get busier through the holidays.
Rental Fees May Rise After Damage Concerns
Board members raised concerns about the condition of the civic center, including paint damage caused by renters. Staff said the city manager and others were considering coming back to council around the first of the year with proposed changes to the master fee schedule, including increasing rental costs. Staff also said the current charges do not fully cover damage, and members discussed the current deposit as low.
New Roof And HVAC Installed At Civic Center
Staff reported the civic center received a new roof last month, completed in one day, and also got a new HVAC system a few weeks before the meeting. |
