This Week's Coverage

Parks and Recreation Meeting · August 6, 2026

Parks Board Takes Over Old Time Saturday 5K

Farmersville’s Parks and Recreation Board spent its August 6 meeting juggling event planning, grant questions, and several unfinished park projects. The biggest clear action was a unanimous vote to take responsibility for the Old Time Saturday 5K and fun run, while several other items were tabled for more information or delayed as the city’s new manager gets up to speed.

Board Votes To Run Old Time Saturday Race

Members voted 4-0 to have the parks board handle the Old Time Saturday 5K and fun run after citywide discussions about keeping the event going. Board members said there will be an entry fee for this race, unlike some recent runs, and said 4B had indicated it would help with some costs.

Second Bleacher Request Gets Board Approval

Members voted 4-0 to allow a new 4B application for a second set of bleachers at the JW Spain complex if a workable location is identified. The board said one set is clearly needed because an existing bleacher is no longer meeting safety standards. A second unit was discussed as a possible way to make shipping costs go further, but its placement is still unresolved.

Trail Day Grant Gets Retroactive Vote

The board also voted 4-0 to approve a 4B grant application that had already been submitted for Trails Day after realizing no formal vote had been taken earlier.

Eagle Scout Rock Garden Put On Hold

An Eagle Scout proposal for a rock garden along the trail was discussed but not decided. Members said they want the scout to attend a future meeting and show pictures before any location is considered. The project was described as a take-a-rock, leave-a-rock setup with painted rocks and a QR code, but no plan has been approved yet.

Playground Company Presentation Delayed

A planned presentation from Hunter Texas Corporation did not happen because the company was not at the meeting. Members said the firm had wanted to show playground equipment options for possible future park upgrades. The item was tabled, so no product review or recommendation was made.

Bathroom Remodel Money Still Sits Unused

$30,000 set aside for bathroom improvements at the JW Spain complex remains unused because the board still does not have a firm project list or quote. Members said the timeline now appears too short to use those funds in the current fiscal year and discussed notifying 4B for transparency. No remodel plan was approved at this meeting.

4B Grant Requests Still Waiting On Action Elsewhere

Members said several 4B grant requests are still pending, including the bleacher request that had been discussed publicly but not officially approved. New City Manager Nancy Smith told the board 4B had heard requests but had not yet finalized its budget. That means residents should not treat those projects as funded yet.

Park Assignments And Master Plan Priorities Delayed

The board postponed decisions on assigning members to specific parks and setting priority items from the park master plan. Members said they want to wait until Angela Smith has more time to review city needs and help guide the next steps. That could shape which parks get the most attention next, including long-discussed areas around the lakes.
