McKinney Approves $5.5 Million Step In Public Safety Building Renovation

May 22, 2026

McKinney City Council approved a $5.5 million guaranteed maximum price for the next phase of the city’s public safety building renovation at its May 19 meeting, advancing work on a long running project to reconfigure space for police operations.

The action covers Phase Six of the McKinney Public Safety Renovation. According to city staff, this part of the project focuses on the south side of the building’s first floor, an area where Fire once operated and that will now be adjusted for police needs.

A guaranteed maximum price is a construction contract structure that sets a ceiling on what the city would pay for that phase of work. The council’s approval means this portion of the renovation can move forward, but staff said more steps are still ahead as the broader upgrade continues.

The renovation reflects changes in how the city is using the building as departments shift over time. Related city updates presented the same day said the fire department has moved out, and the facility is being retrofitted for police headquarters use.

The public safety renovation was one of several capital projects considered by council that night, alongside airport, parks, and police training facility work. For residents, the vote signals continued investment in city facilities that support public safety operations, while the larger renovation project remains in progress.
